Hidden in the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne, Murat is an attractive small town built in stone with a medieval centre, located at an altitude of 3,000 ft in the upper valley of the Alagnon river, a stop on the single track railway line from Arvant to Aurillac built by the Paris-Orléans company.
The station at Murat, opened in 1866, comprised a depot for six steam locomotives with turntable, three water towers, several goods sheds and an attractive stone station building for the passengers. The water towers have all been demolished, but the other buildings remain.
In 2004, the train service included a Corail express from Aurillac to Paris, (three or four carriages hauled by a 67400 diesel), which made a brief stop at 10.45 in the morning and the balancing Paris-Aurillac express whch served Murat just after 6.00pm. Since the end of August 2006, the Corail express has been withdrawn and passengers must change at Clermont-Ferrand. A railcar is provided in place of the Corail express between Aurillac and Clermont-Ferrand.

TER 873827 Neussargues - Brive-la-Gaillarde arrives at Murat in the rain at 16.36. This train ran daily until March 14th and was the return service to Brive for winter sports enthusiasts who spent the day at Le Lioran. During the week-end in the winter of 2004, this train was scheduled with X2800 or equivalent traction. On this occasion, X2205 was leading with X 2889 at the rear of the train.

X 73500 railcars of MIDI-PYRENEES REGION, arrives at Murat at 11.56 this Saturday morning.

Cachée dans le Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne, la belle petite ville de Murat, bâtie en pierre, avec son centre médievale, se trouve dans la haute vallée de L'Alagnon à 900 mètres d'altitude, un point d'arrêt sur la ligne de chemin de fer Arvant-Aurillac, construite par la Cie Paris-Orléans.
La gare, ouverte en 1866, était initialement équipée d'un dépot pour six locomotives, trois châteaux d'eau, quelques halles de marchnadises et un beau batiment voyageurs, d'architecture recherché. Les châteaux d'eau ont disparus, mais le reste de la gare est identique à l'origine à l'exception de quelques simplifications de voie.

Le TER 873827 Neussargues - Brive-la-Gaillarde arrive à Murat dans la pluie à 16.36. C'était le train de neige journalier, jusqu'au 14 mars, pour les habitués de sports d'hiver, qui l'ont empruntés tôt le matin pour passer la journée au Lioran. Pendant les week-ends de cet hiver 2004, le train de neige était prévu avec les X 2800 ou équivalent. Ce jour-là, c'était X 2205 en tête, et X 2889 en queue du train.
